Welcome to the March 2023 edition of Reality Now.   With spring right around the corner, we can’t help but feel so proud of what we’ve achieved already this winter. Alongside thousands of grassroots activists, we’ve called for stronger emission standards, supported environmental justice legislation, and demanded accountability from global finance institutions.     And our momentum is continuing to build!     In just a couple of weeks, we’ll launch our free Power Up Training: From Acts to Action. Let's Leverage the IRA and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for climate action now! Former Vice President Al Gore and an all-star lineup of government leaders (including Senior White House Advisors John Podesta and Mitch Landrieu!) and experts will lead attendees in learning how to take advantage of new climate laws. Join us to learn how you can bring clean energy to your home and community, create good paying jobs, and advance environmental justice.

That the public sector must be massively mobilized in the fight against climate change has long been a bugbear of the right. But the failure to conceive of just how large a role the federal government will have to play in combating climate change has been the left’s own climate denial. The chasm between our present addiction to fossil fuels and the decarbonized economy the world needs is so daunting that it has proven easier to chant “we have the solutions” than it has been to build the political power to win in government.

Climate change is real, it is caused by human activity, and it is having devastating effects around the world and here at home in the United States.

Rising temperatures in the Gulf have strengthened hurricanes such as Harvey in 2017, and have exacerbated the Red Tide to extreme levels, killing wildlife and impacting communities and businesses down the Florida coastline.

In California, global warming has resulted in higher temperatures and less rain causing devastating wildfires to spread at an alarming rate, burning 1.4 million acres in 2018 alone. The raging Mendocino Complex has now become the largest fire in the state's history, burning 450,000 acres.

Stronger and more erratic storms, rising sea levels, extreme heat around the world – the impacts of global warming and the climate crisis are not going to go away. We must come together to force the change that our planet needs.
