Federal Budget and Social Security

a viewpoint. Social Security Works.
If there’s one takeaway from Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address, it’s that he’s just another Republican. Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell … Donald Trump.
Throughout the 2016 campaign, Trump claimed that he’d defend Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. But in his first year in office he, Paul Ryan and Congressional Republicans have attempted to destroy Medicare and Medicaid. And now they’re threatening to pass a budget that will slash $492 million from the Social Security Administration―undermining the most successful social insurance program in our country’s history.
In a new op-ed, Robert Reich says:
"Fresh off passing massive tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, Trump and congressional Republicans want to use the deficit they’ve created to justify huge cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid."
Defending the Social Security Administration from further cuts is the next battle over Social Security. At a time when 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day, why would we cut administrative funding that allows them to make informed decisions about claiming the benefits they’ve earned their whole lives?
Next week, when Congress votes on a new federal budget, we must demand that they restore the Social Security Administration to its full funding―not sneak cuts to the SSA through the back door in a must-pass spending bill.
Republicans have underfunded the SSA for at least a decade―making it increasingly difficult for the American people to access the benefits we’ve earned with every paycheck. But together, we’re telling Washington politicians where the American people stand: Expand, don’t cut, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid!
Thank you,
Michael Phelan
